Welcome 2012! I am personally very excited to start a New Year. I am proud to announce my latest book release – The Metabolism Boosting Diet – and, hope you follow along as we take 5 women and help them achieve their goal weight in 2012 on CityLine.
The theme this year is change. If you have a health goal you would like to achieve, I assure you, you can do it at any age or any stage. In fact, the age range in my practice is from ages 8-83!

THE METABOLISM BOOSTING DIET RECIPES
This delicious recipe is a perfect addition to your weight loss plan. Easy to make and high in protein – you will definitely add this to your morning regime.
- ½ cup of cottage cheese (1%)
- ¼ tbsp of canola oil
- 1 whole egg
- 1 egg white
- 1 ½ tbsp of wheat germ
- 1/3 cup of whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp of cinnamon
- 2 frozen strawberries
- ¼ tsp of agave syrup
- Combine the cottage cheese, canola oil, egg and egg white in a processor and blend.
- In another bowl, mix the wheat germ, whole wheat flour and cinnamon
- Combine the two mixtures together
- Heat a non-stick pan, lightly oiled.
- Drop two tablespoons of mixture onto pan and cook until golden
Microwave the strawberries for 30 seconds. Then mash with a fork. Mix in the agave syrup and top over pancake.
Nutrition (3 small pancakes = entire mixture above)

Cook time: 10 minutes
Calories: 298, Carbohydrates 25g, Protein 28g, Fat 10g, Fiber 4g
Crispy Kale Chips
Instead of eating potato chips, try this virtually “free” snack. These chips are low in calories and high in antioxidants, beta carotene and fibre — how can you go wrong?
- 1 bunch organic kale
- 2 tbsp (30 mL) extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 tsp (5 mL) apple cider or balsamic vinegar
- 1/2 to 1 tsp (2 to 5 mL) kosher or sea salt
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Rinse kale and pat dry with paper towel. Cut off stems and tear leafs off the rib. Discard the centre rib pieces.
- In a large bowl, whisk together oil, vinegar and salt. Add kale and gently toss.
- Divide kale among 2 parchment paper–lined baking sheets. Bake for 15 to 17 minutes, until crispy.
Per serving: 105 calories, 14 g total fat, 14 g carbohydrates, 4 g protein, 2 g fibre, 0 g sugars
Easy-Peasy Banana Flax Muffins
(Thanks to nutritionist Krissy Smith for sharing this recipe for the book – these muffins are delicious!)
Makes 12 muffins
- 2 cups (500 mL) mashed organic bananas (about 5)
- 1/4 cup (60 mL) organic raw cane sugar
- 1 organic egg, lightly beaten
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) organic applesauce
- 1 tsp (5 mL) baking powder
- 1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda
- 1 cup (250 mL) organic quinoa flour
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) ground flaxseed
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) chopped walnuts
- Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
- In a bowl, mash bananas. Stir in sugar and egg. Add applesauce. Stir in baking powder, baking soda, quinoa flour, and ground flaxseed until just combined. Gently stir in fruit and nut or seeds of your choice.
- Spoon batter into muffin tins (greased with fat of your choice, such as coconut oil or butter), filling each to three-quarters full. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until skewer inserted in centre of a muffin comes out clean.
Per serving: 120 calories, 2.5 g total fat, 24 g carbohydrates, 3 g protein, 4 g fibre, 3 g sugars
